BAFTA Style Suite 2013: HoF Goes behind the scenes

On Sunday May 12th, our favourite stars of the small screen will be walking the red carpet in their finest at the 2013 Arqiva BAFTA Television Awards. As proud Official Style Partners of the awards, here at House of Fraser we are very excited to see who wins big on the day, but also who wears what.

To celebrate all things BAFTA style and get a sneak peek as to how the celebs prepare on the big day, HoF went behind the scenes at the BAFTA Style Suites to discover what it’s like to be a celeb for the day.

Held at the suitably glamorous and luxurious Corinthia Hotel, the super stylists of the House of Fraser press department along with the most red-carpet worthy gowns and accessories, decamped to their very own suite for day, alongside some of the biggest names in beauty including MAC make-up, Mark Hill hair and St Tropez tanning.

The setting was ideal to undergo a glamorous makeover, and after arriving in my normal every-day clothes and minimal make-up, 3 hours later I was red-carpet ready with big hair and a showstopping Biba gown….

Stage One: The Hair Prep

The brief was ‘the bigger the better’ a la Cheryl Cole so the lovely girls from the Mark Hill salon set about adding some volume to my tired tresses with the help of some heated rollers.

Stage Two: Tan Time

To get that a-list glow, a tan is a must. Luckily, the St Tropez team had set up shop in one of the suites and were on hand to give my skin a boost. Having not seen the sun for some time, my skin was looking rather pasty, but after 10 minutes in the hands of the lovely Michaela, I was sun-kissed and ready for the red carpet.

So after the initial stages, the look isn’t so much ‘glamour’ more Nora Batty but we’re getting there…

Not quite red carpet ready just yet…

While waiting for my turn in the make-up chair, I took the opportunity to explore the suite and see what goodies were on offer. Chocolates and flowers are always guaranteed to win over any woman and the view from the House of Fraser suite’s balcony topped it off nicely. I could definitely get used to this….

Stage Three: Make-up

I love make-up but tend not too wear that much due to lack of time and skills so I was very excited to be in the hands of the MAC make-up artists. To go with the big hair look, we decided to go for a full-on face complete with classic smokey eye and nude lip.

BAFTA Style Suite: Make-up

Make-up artist Caroline suggested we go for a brown and bronze eye which is great for bringing out blue eyes like mine. As the fake tan had already given my face a slight golden glow, Caroline kept the base to a minimum with just a touch of MAC Face and Body Foundation and covered up any redness with a little bit of MAC Select Cover-up Concealer. A hint of gold and a chocolate brown shadow were blended together to create a rich colour and finished off with some MAC Falsh Eyelashes in the outer corners to create a wide-eyed effect. The final touch was a pinky-nude lip using a MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Etcetera all over for a lasting finish.

Ta da….!

Stage Four: The Big Reveal

After letting the rollers do their magic for a few hours, I was back in the Mark Hill suite to unleash the volume!

Shake it all about!

After some more tonging, an upside down head shake and a lot of hairspray, the final look is revealed. I love it so much that I might not wash my hair for the rest of the week. Sssh, just don’t tell anyone!

Final Stage: The Dress!

I’m nearly at the end of my BAFTA style makeover experience but it’s now time for the final floruish; choosing the all important dress. To accompany the hair and make-up, only full on glamour will do. After perusing the rails and trying on a few different styles including this gorgeous red Biba number, a beautiful Grecian style dress in my favourite blue hue catches my eye…

I’ve found ‘The One’! This stunning blue Biba dress is the perfect red-carpet dress and the v-neckline and full skirt make it really flattering ensuring I feel comfortable and confident which is key for any big occasion. Now all I have to do is perfect my most paparazzi perfect pose….

BAFTA Style Suites: Pose!

I have had the most amazing experience and being in the hands of the BAFTA Style Suite teams is enough to make anyone feel glamourous. A big thanks to everyone at BAFTA for a wonderful day and the HoF press team for helping my red carpet look come together.

Kate O'Brien

Hi I'm Kate, in a previous life I was Womenswear Editor but these days you are more likely to find me pouring over a planning calendar than the latest copy of Elle in my role as Online Content Producer. A Northern tourist in London, some of my favourite things in life include red wine, chutney (accompanied by cheese), sequins, grey cashmere and Matt Damon. I am known in the HoF office for owning far too many coats for one person, laughing too loud, and drinking full fat Coke only when hungover. My life's ambition is a simple one; to own a Puggle.
