Fragrance Notes: As Seen in Woman & Home

There are many things that are personal to people and without a doubt, fragrance is one of them. They evoke a sense, feeling, emotion and trigger memories. As the famous Christian Dior once said, “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting,” so how do you choose one that is perfect?

Our Director of Beauty, Ruth Newman, features in Woman & Home to give a little bit of guidance – ideally timed for Christmas!

Her top tips:

Know what fragrances they like and have worn before – a consultant can help identify which fragrances have a similar scent

Seasonality is important – winter noramlly calls for a slightly heavier scent

Know the recipients personal tastes, a quirky personality will usually call for something different compared to a calssic glamour fan

Floral Feminine Scents

Floral and feminine fragrances can range from delicately warm, to fresh and clean. The perfect examples are Acqua Di Parma Rosa Nobile and Dolce & Gabbana Dolce, both beautiful floral fragrances in very different ways. This year, we have had some exceptionally beautiful new fragrances.

Fresh Modern Scents

A fresh and modern scent will transport you to the outdoors with citrus hints and sea air notes. My favourite this year is Cologne Eau De Parfum by Etat Libre d’Orange

Rich Sensual Scents

Think warm and spicy notes such as amber, cinnamon, honey and oud. Gucci Oud by Gucci, with notes of saffron, Bulgarian rose and raspberry, is a perfect introduction to an oriental-oud fragrance.

Bianca Matley

My name's Bianca, Menswear Editor. Contrary to belief, I love Eastenders but wasn't named after the character... heyday of hoops and ponytail quickly erased from memory. Times have changed (thankfully) and although I love beauty, I equally love a good men's oxford shirt and jacket or two, for myself of course. You'll now find me flicking through men's magazine pages and my favourites list is increasingly becoming male dominated. Dare I say, there's a lot to learn from their style...
