With summer just around the corner, we can’t wait to get into the new season makeup mood. So exclusively for you, we asked four makeup artists about their favourite trends for summer 2014 and how you can recreate them like the professionals…
Annie Levy – Make Art Not War
Annie Levy is a freelance hair and makeup artist, working predominantly with TV celebrities and presenters.
“My favourite summer trend will always be the Bronze Goddess look. Bronze and gold colours mix perfectly with a summer tan – there’s a shade of bronze for every skin and hair colour.
My best makeup tip would be to not overdo it. Keep your bronzer not too far off the scale of your base colour, always add cheekbone highlighters to accentuate the natural glow from a tan or fake it. Finally, never forget a caramel lip gloss for the ultimate Bronze Goddess lip!
My favourite products are Bobbi Brown Bronzers, Clinique Liquid Illuminator highlighter and Estee Lauder Vivid Shine Lipstick in Spiked Toffee.”
Kenneth Soh – Musings of a Makeup Artist
Kenneth Soh has worked with Asia’s top models, photographers and stylists on major fashion campaigns and now resides in London working for a variety of publications.
“One of my favourite trends for the summer is a bronzed and natural look, mimicking a day in the sun.”
“The key is to keep everything tonal and nude. After a light tinted moisturiser and concealer, apply a bronzing gel or liquid to areas where the sun hits naturally; your forehead, temples, bridge of the nose, cheekbones, chin and the collarbones.
Fill in and brush your brows up to create full, youthful looking eyebrows. Add a bronze wash on the eyelids and apply a nude lipstick or tint. Ensure you curl your lashes and apply a light coat of brown mascara – you’ll fit right in with the beauties in St Tropez!”
Sally Orchard – Cornwall Makeup Artist
Makeup artist Sally Orchard, specialises in bridal, fashion, beauty and editorial makeup.
“My favourite trend this summer is bright orange lips. This look can suit everyone but especially those with warm toned skins. It’s a great look on the beach or in the city.
To wear this look, keep the skin dewy and the eyes soft with eyeliner and mascara, as the focus is all about the lips. If this look is too bold, you can wear a coral lipstick or a sheer colour, just giving you a hint of colour.”
“To make this look stand out, wear a matte lipstick or crayon for bold lips with ultimate staying power!”
Kylie McMichael – Kylie McMichael
Kylie McMichael is a makeup artist helping brides create the looks for their Wedding Day, as well as volunteering for ‘Look Good Feel Better’, an international cancer support charity.
“My favourite trend this summer are flicks, just on the corner of the eye.
They’re more petite than the original cat eye flick, more wearable AND doable. You can also widen the colour palette of the flick itself – think chocolatey tones and navy blues.”
“You can wear them through to AW14 by enhancing the lower lashes at the edge with a soft line in the same or complementing colours.
Recreate this with Laura Mercier’s Gel Pots in Black, Espresso or Indigo.”
