Last week, I met with Urban Decay’s National Makeup Artist, Caron Keane, to get the Smoky Eye makeover. There are 4 signature looks that come with this palette, so Caron tested out two contrasting looks on me; the Everyday Smoky and Iconic UD Smoky Eye.

LOOK 1: EVERYDAY SMOKY

Step-by-step

  1. Apply Eyeshadow Primer Potion from the lash line to the brow bone and also on the lower lash line.
  2. Using a blending brush, sweep COMBUST on the brow bone and softly blend into the crease and the centre of the lid
  3. With the Smoky Smudger Brush, dab ARMOR on the inner corner and softly blend up toward the crease.
  4. Use a shadow brush to apply ARMOR to the outer corner, wrapping it around the lower last line.
  5. Soften the edges of ARMOR by applying PASSWORD to the crease and blending down to the lower lash line.
  6. Tightly line the entire lash line with PERVERSION 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil and use the Smoky Smudger Brush to softly smudge out.
  7. Load lashes with Subversion Lash Primer and Perversion Mascara
  8. Line and fill in lips with LIAR 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil and top with SHEER LIAR Sheer Revolution Lipstick.

My verdict: “I love this look. The nude colours go really well with my skin tone and I love the contrast with the mascara, which perfectly curls my eyelashes. The darker shades in the outer corner of my eyelid naturally blend and don’t look too harsh. It makes my eyes look wider and fuller, perfect for an early morning start in the office or a casual meet-up with friends.”

LOOK 2: ICONIC UD SMOKY EYE

Step-by-step

  1. Apply Eyeshadow Primer Potion from the lash line to the brown bone and also on the lower lash line.
  2. Using a blending brush, apply COMBUST from the crease to the brow.
  3. With a shadow brush, highlight the entire brow bone with THIRTEEN, blending it well with COMBUST.
  4. Using PERVERSION 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, line the entire lash line. It should be slightly thicker at the outer corner. Use the Smoky Smudger Brush to smudge out.
  5. With a blending brush, apply SMOLDER on the lid and crease, blending up and out. Then use the Smoky Smudger brush to apply it over PERVERSION on the lower lash line.
  6. Using the Tapered Crease Brush, blend PASSWORD into the edge of SMOLDER and into crease. With the Smoky Smudger Brush, wrap PASSWORD around the eye and soften the edges of the lower lash line.
  7. Use the Smoky Smudger Brush to highlight the inner corner with HIGH.
  8. Load lashes with Subversion Lash Primer and Perversion Mascara.
  9. Coat lips with Ultimate Ozone Multipurpose Primer Pencil and top with FAILBAIT Revolution High-Color Lipgloss.

My verdict: “The dark navy and black mixed with the gold glittery shades is amazing on this look. It’s great for clubbing or dinner out. I’ll definitely be wearing this look again as it gives your eyes a dazzling look.”

After meeting Caron Keane and trying the Smoky look, I’ve been totally converted into a smoky eye fan. I’d recommend this palette for anyone wanting  a natural or evening look that doesn’t look OTT but will definiely get heads turning.

NAKED SMOKY TIPS AND TRICKS

While perfecting the smoky eye takes a bit of practice, it’s well worth the effort. Need a little help? Here are the best tips and tricks.

MASTER THE TOOLS
Use the Smoky Smudger Brush to highlight specific areas, like the brow bone or the inner corner. This brush is also perfect for laying down pigment at the lash line and blending shadow into liner. Use the Tapered Crease Brush to soften the edges of shadow, diffuse color, and define the hollow of the crease.

PERFECT YOUR COMPLEXION
With a smoky eye, your complexion has to be on point. You want to keep all the focus on your eyes, so don’t let redness or dark circles steal the show. Focus on mattifying the forehead, nose and chin (aka the T-zone), then create a natural glow on the highest point of the cheekbone.

FOLLOW THE SMOKY TRINITY
To avoid that panda-eye disaster meets bar room brawl look, use three similar-toned shadows for a foolproof smoked-out effect—a light satin or sparkle shade on the inner corner, a medium metallic shade on the lid, and a dark matte shade on the lash line and crease. The result: guaranteed dimension and depth.

INCORPORATE COLOR
Smoky doesn’t have to mean black. Adding a little color creates an unexpected look that really pops. Try blending Smolder, a really cool purple-black from Naked Smoky, over Perversion 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil. Or tight-line with Deep End or Psychedelic Sister to brighten up your look and make it more playful.

ELEVATE YOUR BROW GAME
Your brows should be groomed, but never over-manicured. Don’t square off the edges or make them too boxy. Your brows are cousins, not identical twins. There are slight imperfections in nature; that’s what makes things beautiful and interesting.

COMBAT SHADOW FALLOUT
Don’t let fallout ruin a perfect complexion. Apply foundation, concealer and powder AFTER you nail your smoky eye. Bonus: Waiting to do your complexion also means you don’t have to think about where you’re resting your hands while you’re working on your eyes.

DOWNBLEND
Sometimes when you blend a darker shadow out of the crease, you can’t quite get it as smooth and seamless as you’d like. Downblending helps make shades fade together like they were airbrushed on. Once you’ve blended your darker contour shade up and out of the crease, take a fluffy brush and dip it in a neutral-toned shade. Starting above the darker shade, lightly dust your fluffy brush where the two shades meet.

MAKE YOUR MAKEUP LAST ALL DAY
A beautiful, smoky look takes time to apply. Keep your eyes and complexion looking fresh and vibrant by finishing your look with All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. It keeps makeup looking just-applied for up to 16 hours and feels fresh and cooling on the skin.

As you can guess this meant I grew up around a lot of hairspray and glitter, hence my love for all things beauty (Urban Decay and M.A.C are my saviours!). The rest of my time is either spent devouring feta, beetroot and quinoa salads, watching The Millionaire Matchmaker or getting broody over super cute kids’ clothes.
