Last week, I met with Urban Decayai??i??s National Makeup Artist, Caron Keane, to get the Smoky Eye makeover. There are 4 signature looks that come with this palette, so Caron tested out two contrasting looks on me; the Everyday Smoky and Iconic UD Smoky Eye.

  1. Apply Eyeshadow Primer Potion from the lash line to the brow bone and also on the lower lash line.
  2. Using a blending brush, sweep COMBUST on the brow bone and softly blend into the crease and the centre of the lid
  3. With the Smoky Smudger Brush, dab ARMOR on the inner corner and softly blend up toward the crease.
  4. Use a shadow brush to apply ARMOR to the outer corner, wrapping it around the lower last line.
  5. Soften the edges of ARMOR by applying PASSWORD to the crease and blending down to the lower lash line.
  6. Tightly line the entire lash line with PERVERSION 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil and use the Smoky Smudger Brush to softly smudge out.

My verdict: ai???I love this look. The nude colours go really well with my skin tone and I love the contrast with the mascara, which perfectly curls my eyelashes. The darker shades in the outer corner of my eyelid naturally blend and donai??i??t look too harsh. It makes my eyes look wider and fuller, perfect for an early morning start in the office or a casual meet-up with

While perfecting the smoky eye takes a bit of practice, itai??i??s well worth the effort. Need a little help? Here are the best tips and tricks.

Use the Smoky Smudger Brush to highlight specific areas, like the brow bone or the inner corner. This brush is also perfect for laying down pigment at the lash line and blending shadow into liner. Use the Tapered Crease Brush to soften the edges of shadow, diffuse color, and define the hollow of the crease.

With a smoky eye, your complexion has to be on point. You want to keep all the focus on your eyes, so donai??i??t let redness or dark circles steal the show. Focus on mattifying the forehead, nose and chin (aka the T-zone), then create a natural glow on the highest point of the cheekbone.

To avoid that panda-eye disaster meets bar room brawl look, use three similar-toned shadows for a foolproof smoked-out effectai??i??a light satin or sparkle shade on the inner corner, a medium metallic shade on the lid, and a dark matte shade on the lash line and crease. The result: guaranteed dimension and depth.

Smoky doesnai??i??t have to mean black. Adding a little color creates an unexpected look that really pops. Try blending Smolder, a really cool purple-black from Naked Smoky, over Perversion 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil. Or tight-line with Deep End or Psychedelic Sister to brighten up your look and make it more playful.

Your brows should be groomed, but never over-manicured. Donai??i??t square off the edges or make them too boxy. Your brows are cousins, not identical twins. There are slight imperfections in nature; thatai??i??s what makes things beautiful and interesting.

Donai??i??t let fallout ruin a perfect complexion. Apply foundation, concealer and powder AFTER you nail your smoky eye. Bonus: Waiting to do your complexion also means you donai??i??t have to think about where youai??i??re resting your hands while youai??i??re working on your eyes.

Sometimes when you blend a darker shadow out of the crease, you canai??i??t quite get it as smooth and seamless as youai??i??d like. Downblending helps make shades fade together like they were airbrushed on. Once youai??i??ve blended your darker contour shade up and out of the crease, take a fluffy brush and dip it in a neutral-toned shade. Starting above the darker shade, lightly dust your fluffy brush where the two shades meet.

A beautiful, smoky look takes time to apply. Keep your eyes and complexion looking fresh and vibrant by finishing your look with All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. It keeps makeup looking just-applied for up to 16 hours and feels fresh and cooling on the skin.
