When it comes to finding your perfect foundation it can be a minefield. From finishes and formulas to coverage and shades, without a make up artist’s knowledge buying a new foundation can be a daunting task!

Luckily we’ve come up with our guide to finding your perfect finish to equip you with everything you need to know about the terms most commonly used to describe foundation. Read on and get ready for your close up.

Coverage

Maximum or full coverage

Full coverage foundations are exactly that. They give you the highest level of coverage creating a flawless, even skin tone. These foundations are great for troublesome skin types as well as helping to camouflage scarring, redness and hyper pigmentation. These are often matte finish foundations so are great for oily and combination skin types. These can often be more difficult to remove at the end of the day so I would advise double cleansing with a face wipe followed by your favourite skincare routine.

Our top Maximum Coverage foundations

1. Estee Lauder Double wear Maximum Cover Make Up £26.50

2. Bellapierre Pressed Mineral Foundation £39.99

3. La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation £130.

Medium Coverage

These are slightly lighter than full coverage foundations but still offer a good level of product to even out skin tone and cover imperfections. These are great everyday foundations for all skin types as they come in wide variety of finishes and won’t clog up the skin so can easily be removed at night.

Our top Medium Coverage foundations

1. Yves Saint Laurent Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation £34

2. Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Foundation £20

3. Benefit Hello Flawless Foundation £24.50

Sheer Coverage

This is the lightest coverage foundation available. These foundations are great for hot summer months or times when your skin is having a good day and you just want a bit of help to even out and enhance the skin tone rather than trying to cover up those imperfections. These are great for normal skin types that are neither particularly dry nor oily.

A Satin Finish?

These foundations create a natural, dewy finish without looking too luminous. These are great for normal/dry skin types however, more oily girls may want to steer clear as you may feel like it makes you look oily rather than dewy. These formulas are usually liquid.

A Matte Finish?

A matte finish is exactly that, matte. These formulas are great for oily skin types or times when you need more coverage as they don’t add any shine, shimmer or dewiness to the skin. These formulas are usually in powder form but are also available in some liquid as well as compact formulas.
