The Brand You Need: Cornelia James

Established in 1946 and by Royal Appointment since 1979, Cornelia James creates luxury British gloves. Excellence and quality is reflected in each and every piece in the collection. A Cornelia James accessory doesn’t just finish a look, it creates the moment.

Small leather goods and sumptious scarves complete the chic collection, with gloves for any occasion being the main attraction. Feather detailed for that special occasion, warm wool for those chilly mornings or buttery leather for that touch of luxury, Cornelia James has got you covered.

We caught up with Genevieve James, Creative Director at Cornelia James to find out a bit more about the brand…

What’s new at Cornelia James?

We’re really enthusiastic about the launch of Cornelia by Cornelia James, our new diffusion brand. The glove will always be the flagship of the collection, but we have also recently broadened our product range and expanded into luxury cashmere scarves and pashminas and a range of small luxury leather accessories

What is your favourite piece in the AW/15 collection?

I would have to say Desdemona, our pure silk opera length glove with a gorgeous mousquetaire opening and buttons. This glove is just understated elegance, I’ll be wearing it at Covent Garden next week but it just works with so many evening dresses.  If you’re a Downton fan, you might have seen it sported by Lady Mary!

Tell us about a customer favourite…

Imogen, our pure merino wool glove with a side bow, is a best seller. Originally designed by my mother, Cornelia James, for a French department store all the way back in 1972, the glove has evolved to be more contemporary and is now made in a lovely pure merino wool with a side bow.

What has been the proudest moment at Cornelia James?

We were granted the Royal Warrant in 1979 as glovemakers to Her Majesty. It is recognised the world over as a mark of quality and excellence and can’t be bought at any price. It means you are the best at what you do and we are very proud to have held the warrant for over 20 years.

Any high points this year?

We were visited by Gok Wan and Channel 4 at our atelier in East Sussex to film for a Royal Ascot documentary. He’s a real charmer and we even got him to make a pair of gloves.

How long does it take to make a pair of gloves?

The handmade gloves can take anything between an hour and an hour and a half depending on their finishes and fabric. Around 8ft of sewing goes into making one pair of gloves.

What plans do you have for S/S 16?

We look forward to building an even bigger and better range with House of Fraser! We’ve got some good ideas we’re looking to bring off the design table that we think customers are going love.

Alice Carroll

I'm Alice, Al or, if you are the five year old me, Ice (yes, I did want to be a member of Kris Kross, and yes, I did wear my jeans backwards). Womenswear Editor at House of Fraser Online, I've grown out of backwards clothes and instead chose to invest my money in vintage sportswear and bomber jackets, while inking my body with unnecessary tattoos and rapping along to every word of The Streets - Original Pirate Material. My proudest moments were seeing a shoot I styled in my favourite magazine and getting a three-dart-finish in a game of darts. Oh, and Bart Simpson was my first crush.
