Our Social Manager Maddie gives us her take on beauty’s most sought after gadget, the Clarisonic.

‘Even at my most relaxed and breezy, I could be described as someone who likes to be in control. And when it comes to planning a wedding (albeit a small one), during the lead up to Christmas, while working a lot, I could be described as a hyper control freak. And I have been.

The main types of things that are grating on me at the moment are those that are unpredictable and out of my control. For instance, the weather. Until now, the only interest I’ve taken in the weather is a quick peek out of the window to see if it would be a disastrous mistake to wear suede heels to work. But now, I’m seriously outraged that no one is able to tell me the minute-by-minute weather forecast for the precise postcodes that my wedding party and I will be occupying, 5 weeks in advance. (Surely someone on the internet can do that, no!? Apparently not.)

The other unpredictable thing that is playing on my mind is my skin. Of course I need to have perfectly clear skin on the big day. It’s unfortunate that I haven’t been blessed with a naturally glowing pallor. I’ve always had intermittent break-outs, general uneven tone and blemishes, not to mention a habit for scratching my face while asleep.

Up steps Clarisonic.

Getting married does give you a huge excuse to spend money on things you wouldn’t usually… and I’d seen some adverts and reviews for Clarisonic. I was intrigued. People were saying that it completely transforms your skin (I certainly hope so!) and that they haven’t worried about spots since they started using it.

So my Clarisonic arrived, along with a host of lovely bottles of cleansers to try with it. The actual gadget is substantial and quite heavy, and the brush is much softer than I expected. I had imagined an oversized electric toothbrush arriving!

What they say:

“Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems use a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly remove 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone. Cleaner skin is the first step toward healthier skin. And healthier skin is smoother, more radiant and more beautiful.”

They also said that I’ll see the effects after the first time I use it. And my skin will continue to improve over the weeks and months of use.

Steps for getting softer, smoother, cleaner skin in just 60 seconds:

Charge the handle in the charging cradle.

Wet your skin and apply cleanser to the brush head.

Use circular motion; 20 seconds on the forehead, 20 seconds on nose/chin, 10 seconds on each cheek (it helpfully keeps the time for you, and beeps when it’s time to switch).

I’ve followed these steps, twice a day, for one minute each time, over the last couple on months. As they said, the effects are immediate – the texture of my skin was softer (almost like velvet) and felt very thoroughly cleaned. I just felt that I needed more moisturiser than usual as it was slightly tight afterwards.

After a few week’s more… my skin was definitely clearer. People were commenting on how much better it looked (my mother!) and it certainly felt much happier. I guess the stimulation brings a little more pink to my cheeks, combine this with having fewer spots, and I looked a lot healthier!

After a couple of months… I’ve maintained these results using the Clarisonic twice a day. And I think I may have reversed some of the crows-feet and wrinkles that were threatening. I still get some spots though. Fewer than pre-Clarisonic days, but still the odd break-out.

Clarisonic obviously can’t take away all the effects of a fast-paced job and a few too many late nights, and the stress of planning a wedding! But it has made a marked difference in the texture and clarity of my skin.’

Have you tried the Clarisonic? What do you think?

Can you believe it, January is finally here. And if you’re feeling slightly like you’ve overindulged with all that food, cheeky Bucks Fizz and countless ‘Christmas ‘dos’ then I’ve got the perfect detox!

Though you may feel like your waistline needs some attention, why not treat yourself, and your skin to a detox?

Destination Skin salons are situated within 7 House of Fraser stores and pride themselves on bringing Harley Street to the high street. Specialised beauty treatments are no longer privy to the rich and famous, whether you’re looking to refresh your tired skin with a prescription facial, tailor made just for you and your skins needs, or you’re looking for something more permanent, there’s no better time to become you at your best.

Read our reviews below to find out about the treatments we love!

Agera Oxygen Facial reviewed by Mary, Online Editorial Assistant

Having never had a facial before I was really keen to try one. I really liked the idea of this facial as it was described as ‘an instant brightening and hydrating facial, perfect for the party season or to give dehydrated, tired skins a boost.’ Great for sluggish, tired skin polluted by environmental toxins. So, in short it detoxifies, stimulates cell regeneration, increases circulation and hydrates to reveal beautiful, bright skin. Great, with Christmas and New Year coming up I was definitely ready to dazzle!

I met my practitioner Karen who took guide me through each step of the process starting with the infamous skin scanner! Although it was very strange to see my skin under such odd circumstances, a UV light shines onto it to expose patches of dehydrated, congested or oily skin depending on your condition, the results weren’t actually too alarming! I had patches of dehydration which I expected, especially around my eyes which is easily rectifiable with a consistent skin care routine, the most worrying thing was perhaps the sun damage, having been a sunbed worshipper a few years ago I was also expecting this! However, once again this is easily rectifiable, especially as I no longer use sunbeds and always take care in sunlight.

After this the facial began, my skin was cleansed to remove all make up. A cold, gel like cream was then rubbed into my skin, this contained vitamin C to help brighten and revitalise my dull, tired skin and was left on for a few minutes. This was then taken off and followed by an intense moisturiser to help with my dehydrated skin. Again this was left one for a few minutes giving me time to relax and even have a cheeky power nap!

Having never had a facial before I found the procedure a real treat and could definitely get used to incorporating this into a regular routine! My skin felt amazingly soft and so clean, like after a trip to the hygienist, I knew I would never be able to keep this kind of routine up at home. High street products tend to only work on the dead skin cells so rarely live up to the benefits they claim to have. This is why salons like Destination Skin are great. They bring Harley Street to the high street with their quick, easy and accessible procedures. I would highly recommend this facial for anyone needing to brighten up there skin. Despite having to leave with no make up on I definitely felt fresh faced and couldn’t wait to wake up the next morning to see if it had lasted, and it had!

Agera Oxygen Facial, £150 for a course of 3.

Agera Vitamin C Facial Peel reviewed by Emily, Online Assistant Merchandiser

My treatment began with a trip to the ‘Skin Scanner’. The results were a bit scary to say the least but my practitioner Karen assured me that all of what I saw was completely normal and nothing that couldn’t be treated!

The facial started with a thorough cleanse to ensure all make up and grime was removed. The cleanser had quite a strong alcohol smell but didn’t feel harsh at all. Once my skin was primed and ready and my eye shields were on, the peel was applied. The actual peel consisted of 3 layers. Each layer took about 5 minutes to dry and Karen used a hand held fan to speed up the process. After each application I did experience some tingling and itching on my face but this was eased by the cooling sensation of the fan. Karen also pointed out that this meant the peel was working- exfoliating the skin and getting rid of impurities.

After the 3 layers of the peel were applied, my face was covered with damp gauze. Karen then trickled cool water through the gauze to activate and neutralize the peel which sounds strange but was actually very relaxing. After a few minutes of this she took off the gauze and removed the peel. She then applied a lovely fruity smelling Vitamin C peel to hydrate my skin. The facial then ended with the application of DermaQuest Daily Antioxidant Serum which works to hydrate and smooth the skin as well as protect from any further damage.

I then got the chance to look in the mirror and see the results of the peel. Instantly I could see that my skin looked a lot brighter and felt incredibly smooth. Karen said that it is normal to experience some redness afterward but I didn’t have any. She recommended having this type of peel as often as every week to see maximum results and that the results are even more enhanced when paired with microdermabrasion. After seeing the results of the peel I felt fresher, brighter and ready to face the holiday season!

Skin Peels range from £77 – £225 per Treatment.

Microdermabrasion, reviewed by Emily, Online Content Co-ordinator

My skin was dewy and radiant throughout my teens, that is, until I started university. The stress of myriad causes left me with angry, painful spots that were slow to heal and when they eventually cleared up, my cheeks were marked with red imperfections. So, I was extremely eager to trial the Microdermabrasion at Destination Skin.

Microdermabrasion is essentially an intense exfoliation that penetrates deep into pores of the skin and lifts layers of dead skin, dirt and congestion to reveal brighter, plumper and more youthful looking skin.

First my practitioner, Karen, carried out a revealing skin analysis of my face which highlighted the areas of sun damage, congestion, dehydration and scarring. Although it was initially quite shocking, Karen explained what was visible and how the Microdermabrasion treatment could help to clear the build up of dead skin cells and dirt to prevent spots and also to reveal a smoother complexion.

To start Karen cleansed my skin to remove my make up and then covered my eyes with plastic eye shields to protect them whilst she treated my skin.

The Microdermabrasion itself uses a crystal vacuum wand which releases tiny shards of crystals over the skin, whilst suction technology within the wand instantly sucks up the sand-sized particles of crystal, leaving the skin intensely buffed.

Although the treatment could not be described as soothing or relaxing, it is not a painful experience either. The results are instant and although they may vary from case to case, the treatment can essentially benefit a multitude of skin concerns including open pores, Rosacea or redness, congested skin, acne scarring, ageing skin, fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots and pigmentation.

Finally Karen applied a hydrating face mask and allowed it to penetrate it to my skin before cleansing again and finally applying a layer of moisturiser to my face.

I noticed a visible improvement in the tone and overall appearance of my skin as well as a minimisation of red marks. Most impressively however, my skin was silky smooth and dewily fresh – I was instantly transported right back to my idyllic days of innocence and perfect skin.

Some customers may experience a slight redness following treatment but I would certainly recommend this treatment to anyone with any of the aforementioned skin complaints; the treatment is pain free and highly effective at targeting the areas of concerns that many people struggle with for years.

Microdermabrasion £67 per Treatment, £160 for a course of 3

We’ve trawled through all the fab entries and came up with our top 10. Is one of them yours?

First Christmas gifts from my husband
It was 1997, I can remember it as if it was yesterday. We’d only been together for a few months. I unwrapped my gifts and the first one was an epilator. I thought maybe he thinks I am very hairy. Then I opened the second gifts he had bought me some pretty underwear, which is lovely except they were in size 18…..I was a size 10. I didn’t say anything but I was really upset and was very conscious eating my Christmas meal as I thought my then boyfriend thought my bum was huge and I was hairy. We laugh about it now every Christmas. To be fair the epilator was the best present ever because I still use now but I still can’t fit into those knickers.

Husband’s Gift of Love
We have all heard the saying, “You really shouldn’t have” and we usually mean we are touched by the kind thought or overjoyed with the prospect of having something wonderful bought for us. In my case, it was meant literally!

In 2005 my husband and I had just moved from a posting overseas, he working for the MoD and I now glad that I was back in the UK and able to work and earn some extra cash. I commented that, this year, we should spoil each other now that we would both be working and would have a little extra cash.

I shopped for weeks diligently looking for an ideal gift for him, and settled on a pair of silver mother of pearl cufflinks that he had admired on someone else. On opening his present Christmas day, he thanked me with a big hug and a kiss and I commented that he had complained to me he did not have any.

Now eagerly anticipating my gift, I untied the beautifully wrapped box with a big red ribbon, it looked so beautiful, what could it be, I had given lots of hints on what I wanted….so exciting…so exciting…to find a steam iron!

Darling he said, you complained for months that you had found it difficult to get the creases just so in my Army uniform, this will make it so much easier for you, and didn’t the lovely girl in the shop wrap it so beautifully, at no extra cost!

The Suicidal Goldfish
More than ten years ago, I was given a goldfish in a bag from a boyfriend; no bowl or food or any other accessories. I didn’t want a fish, but having been landed with one, as soon as the local pet shop opened after xmas I went out to buy all the kit as keeping in a bag or small bowl was too mean.
I left the goldfish in a large deep pyrex bowl, and went out and spent over £90 on a tank, food, weeds and goldfish type things. So, quite a costly gift for me. I set up the tank, pump, etc, filled it and went to collect my goldfish from his temporary bowl, but he wasn’t in it. I found him dead on the carpet, having apparently made a leap for freedom. It was too late to take the stuff back to the shop, as I’d set it all up, so I had to return to the shop and buy a goldfish for my tank.

Speechless
A number of years ago at my in-laws house on Christmas day my brother in law handed me my present and said that he had put the most thought and effort into my present out of us there. So while all eyes were on me I opened the present with much anticipation, to find a box that said “experience swimming with dolphins” and inside the box was a blow up dolphin! And an instruction leaflet of how to run your bath and blow up the dolphin. But that wasn’t all I got, I also received some blank cassette tapes!! Both presents completely useless. So I smiled and said thank you. While I thought I would hate to see the present he put no thought in to!

Worst present ever – and insulting too!!
A few years ago, my father-in-law (who isn’t best known for his choice in presents at the best of times), handed me an envelope-sized wrapped parcel over the family Christmas table. At first, I thought perhaps he had given up on the whole present buying thing and had instead gone for vouchers. Vouchers, incidentally, would have been much appreciated. I tentatively opened the gift, and prepared my ‘you shouldn’t have’ smile. Inside was a small sachet of hair removal cream “for legs, underarms and bikini areas.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, he then told me (excitedly) that it was “on offer at the chemist!” So rubbish, embarrassing AND cheap. And THEN…. after more present opening around the table, we discovered he had given the same to his own daughter and another daughter-in-law. They must have been on a BUY 2 Get 1 Free offer. Definitely a memorable present! (for all the wrong reasons!), but it makes me laugh now. Wonder what I’ll get this year – tampons, pile cream?

Happy Xmas and a skinny New Year!
A couple years ago I decided, after having put on a lot of weight, that I really needed to diet. I can’t exercise due to health reasons so it is really difficult for me to lose weight. My Husband gave me what he thought was an incentive to lose weight…….some sexy lingerie in a ridiculously small size and a framed photo of me when we first met (when I was a size 10). He put a note in the box which said “With a bit of willpower and determination you could look this good again”. !!!!! Not our best Christmas that year!

Meat the Mother in law….
I am one of those unlucky girls who’s mother in law doesn’t think I am good enough for her son, so a few years ago as my Christmas present she bought me a joint of meat with instructions on how to cook it the way her son liked it….which you may think seems fair but I have been married to him for twelve years and have four children, and I am pretty good in the kitchen!!

The gap really does count
My disaster was a present that I bought for my cat. I ordered a personalised cat bed from a charity catalogue. When I filled in the personalisation box I realised that my cat’s name only just fitted as there was space for only 9 characters. I therefore completed the box leaving no gap in my cat’s name (but figured it didn’t matter as my cat couldn’t read). However someone at the personalisation department realised a space was missing and very kindly left a gap, unfortunately not in the correct place. So my cat, Fat Albert, spent the rest of his days sleeping in a bed that bore the legend Fatal Bert

An unexpected extra
One Christmas morning I unwrapped a pressie from my Nan and as well as the expected gift of a nightie I found she had managed to wrap a pair of her own knickers in the parcel. At least they were new and clean but we still don’t know how she failed to notice them.

Brazil Nuts
When I was young we used to go visit my Great Grandmother Peggy at Christmas, in South End On Sea. She unfortunately was slowly succumbing to Altzheimers, so I always found it a strange affair and never really understood what was going on as I was too young. One year she had given my sisters and I (5 of us in total), a packet of opened tissues, this year however she seemed quite coherent and entertained us with stories of our Great Grandfather in the war. As we got up to leave, she kindly turned and gave me a small paper bag of her Brazil nuts which, whilst not an overwhelming gift, was better than an open packet of tissues. Later that day whilst at my Grandmother’s, I showed her what Peggy had given me (I’d eaten half the packet already) she turned to me and said ‘Put those in the bin, your Nanna Peggy buys Chocolate Brazil Nuts and sucks the chocolate off as she doesn’t like the nuts she leaves those’ I haven’t touched Brazil Nuts since.

And the winner is…

MY GRANDMA

No, I didn’t receive a grandma for Christmas, it’s the presents I’ve received from her over my life.

Now my grandma is very thrifty and a hoarder. When it comes to Christmas we usually have her and my grandad round for Christmas lunch and every year she brings the notorious ‘bag of stuff’. She doesn’t go out, buy a gift, wrap it, label it and give it to you. Instead she fills a carrier bag with random stuff from her house, this mainly consists of jumble sale finds, unwanted gifts she’s received and tombola/raffle gifts.

She’ll pull things out the bag one at a time and will continue to do so until you accept something as a gift. You HAVE to accept something and HAVE to seem pleased otherwise she’ll continue to offer you stuff. Last year my ‘gift’ was a mini bubble bath which had obviously belonged to a gift set at some point in time. Other gifts have included a miniature painting of a horse (covered in dust), a potted plant from her windowsill, a pink dog plush with no back legs and a mini beaded notebook with half the beads missing.

Occasionally she will have a specific gift for you, once I received a second-hand, stained, four sizes too large ‘George’ T-shirt. Not because she thought it was nice, or she thought it would suit me but because it had ‘George’ on the label and my name is George!

Whether they’re block coloured, lacey, animal print or anything in between I love that fact that a usually boring outfit can be made to look completely different just by adding something as simple as tights. Take it from day to night, simple to sexy by picking your favourite pair. Experiment with colour by swapping your usual opaques for wintery hues of burgundy, plum or emerald, or if your feeling daring, spice things up with a splash of animal print. If you can’t bare to part from your trusty black pair try a fun print or lace detail.

I absolutely love the Jonathan Aston collection we’ve currently got online at House of Fraser and have picked some of my favourite pairs to spice up a dull wintery wardrobe.

It may seem daring but try adding any of these to a regular day outfit, it’ll instantly bring it together and is such a great way to stay on trend as well as warm – It’s functional fashion at it’s best!
Not feeling too daring? Dip your toe in the trend and stick with black versions with varying patterns and texture, it’s a lot less intimidating if can’t bare to part with your opaques. I love these distressed ones as they are so much denser so the detail doesn’t affect the quality of the tights, unlike the million pairs I’ve ruined trying to achieve this look myself!

And as Christmas gets closer and closer all I can think about is gifts, gifts and more gifts. If it’s not Mum asking what I want, it’s me desperately trying to cobble together some kind of list so I feel at least slightly organised once I get to the shops and don’t get that awful feeling of, ‘what was I here for?’.

So here is my list of must have beauty gift sets that should be sure to please even those who have everything!

The Estee Lauder Make Up Artist Collection £300

This is the ultimate make up kit and perfect for mum! She has always loved Estee Lauder and I can’t think of anything better to kit her out for looking fab in the new year! It includes every piece of make up she could ever need with 30 colours, brushes and more. Including a Deluxe Eyeshadow Compact with 18 coordinating shades (Summer Linen, Amazing Grey, Amethyst Spark, Flirty Lilac, Pink Flash, Purple Passion, Nude Fresco, Tranquil Moon, Peacock Blue, Smoky Ember, Berry Burst, Tempting Mocha, Ivy Envy, Chocolate Bliss, Ivory Slipper, Sandbar Beige, Hot Cinnamon, Rivera Rose.) Deluxe All-Over Face Compact (Bronze Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer, Estée Lauder Signature Silky Powder Blush in Pink Kiss, Radiant Peach and Nude Rose.) 2 Pure Color Gloss in Orchid Passion Shimmer & Electric Ginger. 3 Pure Color Long Lasting Lipsticks (full-size, in Barely Nude, Candy and Fresh Plum). Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara (10-day supply; in Black). 2 Artist`s Eye Pencils (great for smoky eyes, in SoftSmudge Black, SoftSmudge Brown) Gentle Eye Makeup Remover (full-size 100ml). And as if that wasn’t enough it’s worth over £300 and available at House of Fraser for £50 with any Estee Lauder fragrance purchase. I suppose there’s no harm in topping up on some of life’s Pleasures if it saves me £250 ey!

Origins Ginger ways gift set £29

For My Auntie it has to be abit of Origins! She absolutely loves Ginger at this time of year and this set has all the right products so she can feel perfectly pampered and energised as the temperature drops! The set includes Ginger Essence Sensuous skin scent 50ml, Ginger Soufflé Whipped body cream 200ml and Ginger Burst Savory body wash 100ml.

Narciso Rodriguez For Her gift set £72.50

For my sister is has to be her favourite fragrance, Narsico Rodriguez. As it’s a luxury scent she would never buy it for herself so this is the perfect opportunity to make her feel spoilt! She loves musky scents and this blends floral, amber and woody notes perfectly for colder months. And as it contains a 50ml Eau De Toilette and 10ml Purse Spray she can keep the scent with her all day!

Molton Brown Crystalline gift set £36

For my boss this set is perfect. It’s always a tough one with work colleagues but I find you an never go wrong with Molton Brown. It contains a great range of six beautifully scented body products including Sensual Hanaleni moisture bath & shower gel, Invigorating Suma Ginseng bath & shower gel, Relaxing Yuan Zhi bath & shower gel, Cool Buchu bodywash, ultra smooth Coco de Mer body lotion and a lovely, warming Eucalyptus bath & shower therapy, so there’s bound to be something to suit.

Bobbi Brown Ultimate Party Collection £59

I of course couldn’t put together a December wishlist without sneaking a cheeky pressie in for myself and it had to be the Bobbi Brown Ultimate Party Collection palette. This collection features everything a girl about town needs to look party ready. With 8 Matte, Metallic, Shimmer and Sparkle Eye Shadows plus 4 Glitter Lip Glosses, this palette is perfect for getting perfect party looks for any occassion! And it Includes a Mini Lip Brush and Mini Eye Shadow Brush so it’s great for touch ups on the go.

What’s on you beauty wishlist?

Need help? Take a look at the gorgeous range of beauty gifts online at House of Fraser.
