The A/W 19 trends you can actually wear

The end of summer is nigh - despite the weather's last ditch attempts to bring it back - but don't despair, the days may be getting shorter but fashion's finest season is about to begin. From key investment pieces, think chic, wool coats and oversized macs, to pearls, twinsets and dreamy silk blouses, the autumn trends have never looked so inviting. Here we pick four of the most wearable fashion trends of autumn/winter 19 to get you started.

YA basics

Being pegged as “basic” has never been so sought after, with designers bringing us the elevated minimalism our wardrobe has been craving. Using soft textures and boxy silhouettes, AW19 will be giving us a chic update on contemporary classics like sand-coloured macs, hard-wearing wool coats and strong-shouldered blazers. This season is most definitely about investing in sartorial power players that will serve you well for years to come.

Bad and bourgeois

Anyone with a liking for pretty blouses, kitten heels and hair bows stands to be ahead of the game this season, as we see the polished aesthetic of the ‘70s, middle class bourgeois madame make a triumphant return. Think pearls, tailored twin sets, pussy-bow neck ties, bouclé boxy blazers and silk blouses (tucked in of course) counteracted with grungy hints of leather and chunky boots. Our current penchant of wearing the trends our mum’s may have worn the first time around is proving that old-fashioned behavior is definitely the new modern.

New utilitarian

Stand to attention - the utility trend has risen through the fashion ranks this past season and this looks set to continue into winter. Championed on the runways by the likes of Bottega Veneta, Miu Miu and Chloé, designers have taken cargo trousers, combat boots and utility jackets and combined them with contemporary shapes and fabrics for a distinctively grown-up twist on a previously 'grungy' trend. So, take your prompt from Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin this season and look for boxy silhouettes, boiler suits, patch pockets and dusty hues.

Highlighter brights

Shades of dark mahogany, creamy cappuccino and deep caramel may have ruled the roost on the fall catwalks, but maximalists may rejoice – because there is also a ton of blindingly beautiful colour coming our way. From jewel-like magentas and yolk yellows to the comeliest cobalts, potent neon shades are no longer just a summer affair. Slip the trend into your winter looks by way of a super-saturated piece - a skirt or dress or even just a colour-pop bag - and ground it with neutral tones. Even though there may be gloomy skies ahead, these beauties will make their own sunshine.
