The AW19 beauty trends you need to know

The runway can be an intimidating, somewhat ridiculous mash-up of colours and textures that satisfy our need for beauty inspiration but don't always translate well with our day-to-day style. Autumn/winter 2019, however, saw the return of some true beauty classics. From an inky black smokey eye to a crimson lip, these are the trends that have us looking forward to the new season.

Black is back

Bright colours have dominated eye makeup trends for a while, but a shift back to basics has begun with a black smokey eye, as seen at Tom Ford, Longchamp and Altuzarra. The makeup equivalent to a LBD, it's super versatile and suits just about everyone. Make it extra smudgy to add instant cool to any outfit. Black, graphic liner also featured highly, with wearable '60s feline flicks seen at Erdem and Philipp Plein.

Seeing red

A matte red lip is always in style but it was particularly prevalent on the runway this season, seen at Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta, to name just a few. When paired with flawless skin and minimal eye makeup, a bold red lip is an easy way to look instantly striking and well put together. If a matte finish scares you, give it another chance. New formulas are now more nourishing and long-lasting than ever.

A flush of blush

Fresh-faced with a hint of blush was the order of the day at Chanel and Victoria Beckham. There's a misconception that blusher isn't wearable, but it will actually tie your look together and leave you looking healthy and youthful. Apply to the apples of your cheeks for a natural flush, or your cheekbones for a more sculpted look.

Lash alert

Lashes were big news this season, with bold looks across the board. To emulate the long, dark, twiggy-esque eyelashes seen at Longchamp and Brandon Maxwell, try using a daily primer like the Lash Building Primer by Clinique. When it comes to mascara, choose a volumising formula, applying at least two coats and not shying away from any clumps.
