How to accessorise this autumn

Winter, we would argue, is when accessories come into their own. Scrap summer’s baseball caps and sunnies (or actually don’t. More of that later), the chills of winter is when our passion for the finer things in life – mainly accessories – heats up. From PB (Peaky Blinders) flat caps to cocooning scarves, here’s our lowdown on what’ll keep noggins and style credentials hot this autumn/ winter.

1. The hat

Where once gentlemen everywhere would sport a hat (top hat or flat cap), the equilibrium has turned on its head and now wearing a hat is a fashion choice, rather than obligation. But it’s one we wholeheartedly recommend you embrace as a hat adds a touch of je ne sais quoi to any outfit.

For hat newbies, we recommend a beanie. Choose a dark colour and a not-too-slouchy fit and they can look decidedly smart. When weekends beckon, go looser and wear further back on your head. Try a colour pop like a rusty brown or a neon bright.

Next up, the flat cap. Menswear has been taken over by the PB (Peaky Blinders) effect recently. Maybe it’s the state of current affairs which mean we need a bit of nostalgic comfort. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s a great show. We don’t know. But what is clear is a flat cap isn’t a novelty item but a bona fide on-trend hat to wear this winter. Pair with a black overcoat or even a darkly sophisticated black puffa, and avoid teaming with tweed unless you are of the very confident style variety (no one wants to be mistaken for a TV extra).

The bucket hat may seem of the summer festival only reserve but we argue they can look cool in winter and the AW19 collections seem to agree, only now they come with a handy shower-proof coating. Team with sophisticated staples and no one will think you've been missing since Creamfields. By the same thread, don’t neglect the baseball cap. Choose one in a mellow autumnal hue that’ll tonally match your autumn knits, those autumn leaves and so forth.

2. The scarf

Scarves have been unfairly, we would argue, hijacked by the female fashion department. Gentlemen, we have necks that need warming too. Fortunately, for Autumn/Winter 2019 designers agree and scarves were all over the catwalks. They were large and textured and some had preppy, Harry Potter vibes. Claim back territory on this essential winter add-on with a long scarf caressing a great overcoat or a short, varsity version.

3. The gloves

You know it’s properly cold when the time comes that pockets don’t cut it. Leather gloves are an obviously suave choice but they can look a little on the undertaker side if paired with too stark an outfit or a leather jacket. Make sure your outfit includes some texture, like a wool coat or a knitted crew neck, to keep things looking nice and lovable.

4. The sunglasses

Sunglasses add mystery, cool, intrigue and style clout to any get-up and that fun persona need not be limited to your summer self. Autumn and winter will (fingers crossed) be littered with sun-drenched days ripe for aviator and wayfarer-wearing opportunities.

5. The watch

The watch is the accessory to end all accessories; the one that distinguishes the men from the boys. It’s such a regrettable sight when someone rocks a great outfit ruined by an in-your-face, flashy watch (we’ve all done it). So instead, this autumn, sport a sophisticated and classy watch. Go for a heritage face and a leather or bracelet strap and leave the bling at home (unless it’s a party, we’ll give you that).

6. The bag

Men’s cargo options have blissfully expanded from boring briefcases and standard suitcases to tote bags, belt bags, saddle bags and more. If you’re going to be obsessive about one thing, make it about the quality of your bag. Your wardrobe most definitely needs a city-smart backpack, a rucksack from a trendy outdoor-turned-streetwear brand and a holdall for the gym and weekends.

7. The wallet

Is cash even a thing anymore? We, for one, barely recognise a coin. So as bulging wallets become less and less important, a great cardholder has become the new way to roll (in it).

There you have it. Seven accessories you need, seven extremely good excuses to treat yourself. Go on, we give you full permission to indulge.
