What kids actually want to wear at Christmas

Tradition dictates a lot of things at Christmas... leaving a carrot out for Rudolph, watching that Christmas film, the fact that we absolutely have to have sprouts - and it extends to what we wear. The tradition is that kids get dressed in stiff collars, sickly-sweet dresses and itchy cardigans, but if let loose on a world of sartorial options, what would children choose to wear at Christmas? We’ve gone straight to the source and surveyed mini partygoers to see what they’d put in their festive dressing arsenal. The results are in…

“For Christmas Day, I would wear a unicorn dress with rainbows,” Maisie (5) divulges. “With my purple trainers and a feather in my hair.” Many respondents went with a similarly fairy-tale direction. “A pink dress. A purple dress. With flowers on my clothes,” Rosa (2) exclaims. Eliana (6) had a similar response. “A Mary outfit or an Elsa dress,” she says. “With blue tip-top shoes”, which are high heels her mum explains.

Lots of those surveyed decided on a suitably festive, thematic approach. “A snowman costume” was Barney’s response (6). “A reindeer costume,” shouted Lawrence (4). And when asked what they’d wear to a Christmas party? The exact same costumes.

Some participants had very specific ideas. For a Christmas party Rosie (4) decided on “a Mrs Santa dress (a green swirly-whirly skirt for dancing) and a red top with holly and berries on”. Her sister Emma (8) was very particular on a Christmas skort with an elf jumper.

For some, practicality was no object. Reuben’s party look (3) would be a soldier’s outfit, complete with a shield and sword. But when questioned further, “would you wear a suit? A bow tie? Do you like to look like daddy?”, the answers were all a resounding “yes”.

For others, comfort was king. “I would wear slippers at a party,” Rosa announced, though peppered with her mum’s explanation that the kids wore pyjamas to a party once as it was late and near bedtime. Snowman leggings and a Christmas jumper was Emma’s look of choice for the big day, which sounds rather cosy indeed.

From our extensive fieldwork research, we’ve deduced that kids have great taste. Left to their own devices they’d pick fun combos, that are a lot more imaginative than archetypal festive looks. Our fashionistas have spoken. Shop our partygoer-approved items below and let the festivities begin…
