How to pack for a winter holiday

At this time of year, winter can see never-ending. The work, the dry January, the short days, the long gym queues… the only way to combat this unending sea of doom and gloom is, we have found, to get away. Whether you’re skiing, going on a mini break or chasing that winter sun, follow our guide to what to pack and don't let January get you down. We’ll see you in Cape Town.

Route 1: skiing

Those clear skies, powdery snow, and need we even mention the après ski, are perfect for beating those winter blues. Don’t forget the essentials when packing: close-fitting base layers, warm mid-layers, a great ski jacket and salopettes, skiing gloves, socks, goggles, hat and sunglasses. If you’re seasoned, consider investing in your own boots, helmet, skis and poles.

For when piste turns to pint, you’ll need snow boots and great knitwear. Plus, slippers and swimming trunks are a must for those chalet antics. If you never want to leave the slopes, we won’t blame you.

Route 2: mini break

There’s nothing like a mini break to warm the soul. Nature, culture, food, music, architecture… seeing something other than your commute will stop any January monotony in its tracks. If you’re going for a city break, pack a capsule wardrobe of smart-casual pieces that will multi-task from pavement to park to Pinot Noir.

A plaid or flannel shirt will work for multiple situations, add a jumper for layering, some rugged jeans and comfy, city-smart boots. For pretty much everywhere in Europe, warm outerwear is a must. Choose a wool overcoat that’ll give warmth without the bulk.

A white Oxford shirt, a classic striped tee, a pair of tapered chinos and some loafers and a thin pair of sock will cover you. If classy liaisons are on the cards, wear the shirt with chinos and loafers. For more casual situations, layer the t-shirt under your shirt and wear with boots. Pack it all up in a great leather holdall, and you’re good to go.

Route 3: winter sun

Rather than popping vitamin D tablets, the best antidote for the lack of sun is to chase it abroad. Winter holidays can be problematic as you’re not in the zone for summer dressing, but for a one-week beach holiday, you can keep it simple. Pack six t-shirts, two pairs of shorts, swimming shorts, two summery shirts, a pair of chinos and a pair of jeans for travelling. Take a sweatshirt for chilly evenings, a lightweight Harrington jacket for sightseeing, trainers or plimsolls and then sliders or sandals.

The trick for looking good on a hot holiday is to invest in some really great essentials. Make sure your swim shorts are sharp, and so sharp in fact that they could multitask when beach towel turns to bar stool. Get t-shirts that fit great, shorts in a chino fabric so they look smart and a great pair of aviators that’ll make everything that bit cooler. One patterned shirt is a good bet but keep the other plain and crisp. You’re Cary Grant on that exotic holiday. Remember that. And you’re having a pretty great time while at it. So long January...
