Trend alert: warm neutral interiors

It’s not difficult to understand the appeal of earthy, neutral shades – they’re visually restful, mix well and are generally easy to live with (just like us – honest). But hues that feel light and airy in summer can feel a little stark come autumn. Here’s four ways to warm them up for the winter months ahead.

Why neutrals are anything but boring

MIX IN METALLICS

Magpies rejoice – a bit of subtle shine is the easiest way to upgrade a space that’s feeling a little subdued, and really, the muted metallic is a kind of neutral in itself, with longevity far beyond any seasonal trend. As ever, if you’re looking to add warmth to neutral tones, go for gold, brass or copper accents. This season’s coppers are a little darker than the blush and matte copper combos we see in spring and summer – think warm and rich, not rose gold.

“Our love affair with dusky, earthen colour continues with these smudgy shades”

PLAY WITH PRINT

Get pops of pattern right and they’ll have maximum impact for minimum effort – just our kind of thing. Avoid punchy graphic print in favour of those inspired by the natural world, which are perfect for print-phobics – they’ll add softness and visual relief to layers of neutrals without creating too much contrast. Come autumn, summer’s statement blooms can feel jarring, so swap them for on-trend leaf patterns - these simple, silhouetted botanical prints have serious Scandi appeal.

TRY SOME TEXTURE

Whilst nothing says grown-up luxury like faux fur, there’s far more to adding texture to a space than a cosy throw or the Scandi-approved sheepskin rug. Ceramics are a subtle way to add tactility and visual warmth in a variety of ways – try etched, lined and drip effects, as well as high-shine and reactive glazes. Of course, textiles are key too – think loose knits and on-trend fringing or lightly creased linen as the backdrop for a winter feast.

“We love the mix of soft and strong - top marks for all things artisanal, too.”

ADD ARTISANAL TOUCHES

Who doesn’t love a one-of-a-kind? A subdued palette lets artisanal detail really shine. The key word to remember is craftsmanship – anything that shows the creation process gets top marks. That means raw textures, loose, relaxed shapes and sets of ceramics or accessories that don’t quite (or really, really don’t) match. An eclectic mix of vases will warm up a sideboard or mantelpiece, whilst mismatched tableware in neutral shades will set the mood for sharing. Just add candlelight.
