Spring beauty trends for 2023

Spring is in full swing, and it’s time to switch up our beauty routines. It may be an excuse to treat ourselves to shiny new products, or maybe they’re essentials (we’ll go with that); either way, it’s an opportunity to try something new. For SS23 this means ‘your skin scent but better’ fragrances, grunge smokey eyes and getting our skin to look its healthiest and most glowy.

Skin scents

The ‘no makeup makeup’ of the perfume world, musk-based scents are the must-have fragrances this spring. Whether you wear them alone to enhance your natural clean aroma, or layer with florals and citruses for added depth, these perfumes are a vanity table must-have. Juliette Has a Gun is known for their musky DNA; try ‘Not a Perfume’ for a dose of the single molecule Cetalox as its base, heart and top note. The result? Minimal, clean elegance. Or, try ‘Sunny Side Up’ to experience Iso-E Super as a base note, complemented by iris butter and sandalwood at its heart for a more woody, creamy scent trail.

TOP TIP: Layer your musky molecular fragrance over a scented body cream or oil for an effortlessly fresh scent. Try Jo Malone London’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt body cream; breezy, woody and slightly salted, or Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Bergamot Body Lotion; zesty and uplifting.

Morning-after smokey eye

The latest incarnation of 90s makeup, the morning-after smokey eye is just that: smudged, greased eyeshadow and eyeliner in all its lived-in glory. This trend is not leaving us anytime soon, even in spring. Start with the Frisson Prisme Quatour palette by Givenchy, for a classic black and grey toned eye look. Smudge Charlotte Tilbury’s Rock ’n Kohl eyeliner in Bedroom Black across the lash line, and finish with too many coats of Benefit’s BAGgal Bang mascara, a jet-black mascara that lengthens and thickens lashes with ease.

TOP TIP: Before the eyeliner sets, use your pinkie finger to pull the liner towards the tail of your brow for a makeshift, grunge wing. Or, pat a small amount of clear gloss over your eyeshadow and watch how the pigment breaks down to reveal a perfectly imperfect look.

Protecting your skin barrier

We all know that wearing SPF daily helps prevent signs of aging, and that hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water, but what do we know about the skin barrier? Known as the ‘stratum corneum’, the outermost layer of the skin’s epidermis acts as a protective shield. Damaging your skin barrier can lead to soreness, sensitivity, breakouts, dry skin and subsequently premature aging. So how do you repair it? Avoid regular chemical peels, or harsh exfoliating treatments, and opt for barrier repairing products such as REN’s Evercalm Barrier Support Elixir, layered under Dr Jart’s Ceramidin range, formulated with ceramides to protect against moisture loss.

TOP TIP: Before applying serums, dampen your skin with a little bit of water or facial mist to open the pores and allow more effective absorption.
