The whole world and his wife are hooked on hit US TV show Mad Men. Yet aside from its multi-faceted characters, gripping storylines and quotable one-liners, it also provides a stimulating showcase of classic menswear…

 Set in New York in the early 1960s, Mad Men harks back to a golden age of men’s fashion where strict social etiquette and even stricter dress codes demanded that men work harder to express themselves.

 In order to do this, they focused on attention to detail, fit and dapper accessories – an attitude in menswear that’s making a comeback.

 Grey slim fitting suits are again the order of the day, old school cardigans are back and even bow ties have gained enough momentum to make the Playboy Bunny proud!

 And it’s not just clothing. Flick through any men’s magazine and you’ll see the trend everywhere. My barber has noticed a huge rise in customers asking for such classic ‘dos’ as the ‘short back and sides’ and the iconic quiff. Likewise, in the opticians you’ll see an array of thick rimmed specs à la Buddy Holly and Malcolm X.

 It’s official. Men are mad for Mad Men and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m one of them…
