Celebrating 25 Stylish Years of Kate Moss

Kate Moss

This week saw Kate Moss celebrate 25 years in the fashion industry. Ever since she was scouted on her way home from holiday at JFK airport in 1988, the fickle world of fashion has loved her throughout various boyfriends, scandals, pregnancy and marriage. One thing has always stayed true though; her iconic style. A

Whatever ‘It’ is, Kate has it in abundance. Stevie-Lee Bird, Buyer for iconic brand Biba, sums it up by saying, ‘Kate Moss embodies British style with the perfect combination of attitude and effortless dressing. She is an inspiration to both the high-street and high fashion as she is girly and sexy at the same time.’

It is that ability to look amazing with what appears to be very little effort that is so appealing and whether you realise it or not, Kate plays a part in influencing our day-to-day style. From skinny jeans, floral tea dresses and leopard print faux fur coats, we bet you have a piece in your wardrobe that pays a subtle homage to the woman herself. So in honour of her 25th Anniversary, here are some of our favourite ‘Kate’ looks from over the years…

The Early Years: It was all about minimalism in the 90s and Kate was at the very centre of it all. With boyfriend Johnny Depp on her arm, Kate stuck to simple silhouettes, barely there make-up and scrapped back hair. It was a breath of fresh air after the over-the-top aesthetic of the the 1980s.

Vintage Lover: As Kate’s career progressed, so did her love of all things vintage. Often seen out in retro fur coats and evening gowns, it was when she stepped out in a vintage yellow dress in 2003 that caused the most attention. A thousand lookalikes were spawned and it has become one of her most iconic looks ever.

Festival Queen: Kate changed the face of festival dressing for a whole generation. Cut-off denim shorts, sequins in the mud, Hunter wellies. That was all Kate. Often copied, never bettered.

The Trend-Setter: Ever worn skinny jeans with ballet pumps? Like a lot of things, Kate had already been there, done that before most of the nation had caught on. It is argued that she is the very reason skinny jeans rose to the dizzy heights in which they now sit in wardrobes up and down the land after she was first spotted in them back in the early noughties.

Hi I'm Kate, in a previous life I was Womenswear Editor but these days you are more likely to find me pouring over a planning calendar than the latest copy of Elle in my role as Online Content Producer. A Northern tourist in London, some of my favourite things in life include red wine, chutney (accompanied by cheese), sequins, grey cashmere and Matt Damon. I am known in the HoF office for owning far too many coats for one person, laughing too loud, and drinking full fat Coke only when hungover. My life's ambition is a simple one; to own a Puggle.
