MASTERING THE BASICS

Before going into detail about what blush does, it's important to understand how to apply it correctly.

Step 1

Create a smooth base to work with by exfoliating and moisturising your skin beforehand. Using a quality primer will ensure an even texture and a slip-free finish. Follow with your favourite foundation, concealer and bronzer.

Step 2

Choose your tools. We think a dome-shaped brush with a gently pointed centre works best. The dense texture of this brush will help pack on the perfect amount of product, ensuring fool-proof application.

Step 3

Using a circular motion, lightly swirl the colour onto the apples – i.e. the most prominent part – of your cheeks. You can find the right point by smiling at yourself in the mirror.

Step 4

Blend your blush for a seamless finish, starting in the centre of the face and working your way outwards.

WHERE TO APPLY BLUSH FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

Read on to find out where to apply blush for your face shape.

Heart

Heart-shaped faces have a narrow chin and a broader forehead. To accentuate this facial structure, apply your blush in a 'C' from the top of your temples to your cheekbones. Buff the product lightly onto the temple and increase the amount of product around the centre of the cheek.

Round

Round faces have full cheeks and a curved jawline. Avoid putting the blusher directly onto the cheeks; instead, focus on the contours of the face to help add definition and structure. Try lightly buffing blush onto your temples and just below your cheekbones.

Oval

If you have a narrow chin and forehead with prominent cheeks, you have an oval face shape. Brush the product from the cheekbone to the bottom the ear line and up towards your temple to accentuate your bone structure.

Square

Square face shapes often have straight sides and a flatter jawline. Apply blusher to the apples of your cheeks and swirl outwards to soften any angular contours. Blend the product thoroughly for a delicate finish.

When you've finished applying blusher to suit your face shape, seal your makeup for a look that lasts all day and night.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR

Choosing the right colour for your skin tone is an essential step in achieving a flawless finish, and for working out where does blush go.

Fair Skin

Baby pink will give a natural flush to fair skin, while plum can be used to achieve a more dramatic evening look. Brighten the features by using a peach blush with a subtle touch of shimmer.

Medium Skin

Rich mauve and muted berry shades will bring out the natural warmth of medium skin tones. For a more realistic wash of colour, try an apricot blush.

Olive Skin

Olive skin should balance out cooler undertones with a warm shade. A bronzed peach blush will add flattering contours to the complexion, while a soft rose gives a delicate natural flush.

Dark Skin

Dark skin tones should experiment with deeply pigmented shades such as vibrant pink or orange, which will lend attractive depth to the complexion. Terracotta reds with a hint of shimmer will make dark skin glow.

This classic blush look will give your complexion a healthy vibrancy. To find your colour match, lightly pinch your cheeks and mimic the shade that arises.

Step 1

Map out where you are going to apply the product. You should keep the colour localised to the apples of your cheeks, and not extend it any lower than the bottom of your nose.

Step 2

Swirl your brush into your formula of choice. Then, using light circular motions, gradually buff it onto the centre of your cheeks.

Step 3

Blur away any distinct outlines with a brush or damp beauty blender.

This technique will bring flattering structure to your complexion. Choose a colour that is one shade darker than your natural lip colour.

Step 1

Locate those cheekbones! Suck in to find the line that your face naturally follows.

Step 2

Using an angled brush for enhanced precision, gently tap your brush into the blusher instead of swirling it, so as not to overdo the colour.

Step 3

Brush just beneath your cheekbones in a light sweeping motion, buffing out towards the bone and building colour as you go. Blend any excess product upwards in a diagonal motion. For further definition, apply a dewy highlighter to the points of your face that the light naturally hits.

Your skin type will affect the comfort, longevity and finish of the blusher that you you choose.

Oily

Those with oily skin should try a pliable gel blush. It has an easy-to-blend consistency and will stay in place all day.

Combination

If you have oily cheeks, select a blush with a long-lasting powder or tint formula. For drier cheeks, try a light mousse consistency.

Dry

People with dry skin should steer clear of powder or stain formulas, and choose a moisturising cream blush. It will give a dewy finish and won't stick to any dehydrated patches.

Normal

The blush world is at your disposal! Experiment with gels, creams and powders in a variety of different intensities and colourways. Remember to set your blush with powder for a photo-ready finish.
