The new denim rules

With a new season comes a chance to update the most hard-working portion of your wardrobe – your denim. We know too well how easy it can be to fall in love with one pair of jeans and then wear them every day from that moment on, but there is plenty more fun to be had by embracing these fun styles. For the season ahead, denim takes on a nostalgic feel, whether it be styling a pair of coveted indigo straight-leg jeans with a retro blazer or investing in a Western-style denim dress. Keep reading for your denim dressing 101.

The cuts to know

We’re calling it: straight leg jeans might just be the cut of the season. Sacrificing stretch in favour of more rigid styles might sound sartorially risky, but once you find your perfect fit, you’ll realize that these vintage-look, leg-lengthening styles are incredibly flattering – especially when high-waisted. When it comes to length, we suggest a crop just above the ankle to avoid bunching and show off your favourite footwear. If you can’t bear to part with your steadfast skinny jeans (we really don’t blame you), then opt for styles that eschew fussy details and fraying for the fresh simplicity of deep indigo or black with polished topstitching.

How to style

When it comes to our beloved blues this season, it’s definitely not OTT to double up on your denim or even wear it top-to-toe. Try teaming a tailored denim jacket with a culottes-style jean or mix straight, white bottoms with a longline denim coat, there are plenty of ways you can play with just a couple of styles. Alternatively, swerve the jeans altogether and opt for a super-chic denim shirt dress paired with a statement bag and boots for a cool look with minimal effort.

Not so blue

For us, blue rigid denim and classic skinnies will forever be an integral part of our fashion repertoire, but if you do feel like venturing into something a little more adventurous, we suggest dabbling in some alternative colours and fun, printed styles. Just like your failsafe denim staples, a printed style will look chic with a simple tee and leather jacket or mac. Feeling a little more daring? Throw on a leopard print or stripped shirt and embrace the print clashing trend.
