Spring beauty trends for 2019

Spring beauty trends for 2019

As we move slowly into spring, it’s time to start switching up our beauty routines. Not just an excuse for out with the old and in with the new, it’s also the time to get experimental with new trends. For SS19 this means bright colours and glowy, bare skin.

Shop Beauty

Vibrant eyes

Using bold colour on your eyes can be intimidating, but it’s a stand-out trend for spring and the new season has us reaching for shades of azure blue. Seen on the runway at Erdem and Missoni, Margot Robbie also wore the look at the 2019 BAFTAs proving it’s very wearable when done right. We love the Diorshow On Stage Liner in Pearly Turquoise and the Shiseido Kajal InkArtist in Sumi Sky. Pair with a nude lip to keep it low key, or try an orange lipstick for a more striking combination.

Monochromatic pink

For an ultra-feminine look that flatters everyone, try wearing pink tones on both your eyes and cheeks. Channel the SS19 Giorgio Armani girls or Yara Shahidi on the red carpet and finish with natural lips and brows. Charlotte Tilbury’s Luxury Palette in Pillow Talk paired with the Shiseido Minimalist Whipped Powder Blush will brighten up even the dullest spring day.

A barely-there base

At the other end of the spectrum, skin was mostly left looking very natural. It could be the Meghan Markle effect that saw freckles being embraced at Preen, while Badgley Mischka and Altuzarra added a dewy-verging-on-shiny glow. Recreate the look by prioritising your skincare routine and using a lighter base like the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue. Add a little concealer only where truly necessary.

The Beauty Cabinet: best lip products

The Beauty Cabinet: best lip products

These days we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to lipsticks, balms and glosses, so choosing which one deserves a place in our handbag is no mean feat. Thankfully our beauty team has tried more than your average makeup junkie, so when something stays in our rotation, you know it’s truly passed the test. Here’s our pick of the lip products we can’t live without.

Shop Lips

“Anyone who knows me knows I love a red lipstick. At the moment my favourite is the Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge. It’s both highly-pigmented and moisturising with a semi-matte finish, and best of all, it lasts all day.” - Jamie Adams, Buyer

Dior, Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge, £30

“During winter I always keep this balm to hand as it’s the best product for combating dry lips. It contains La Mer’s nutrient-rich miracle broth which hydrates and strengthens their protective barrier. If I’m wearing a lipstick in the evening, it keeps the colour long-lasting too.” - Sarah Thompson, Buyer

La Mer, The Lip Balm, £52

“This lip gloss only launched recently, but it’s quickly become a go-to in my makeup bag. The hydrating, glossy formula gives the famous Urban Decay Naked range a new spin. I like to swipe this over the top of any nude lipstick to instantly plump and nourish my lips." - Eleanor Spain, Assistant Buyer

Urban Decay, Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lipgloss, £15.50

“As a busy mum I don’t have a lot of time to put my makeup on. This lipstick gives more colour than a tinted balm, but it’s not heavy enough that I need a mirror to apply it. The best bit is that once it’s finished you can use the case to make a ring (loads of beauty bloggers are doing it!)” - Georgia-May Dayton, Brand Partnerships Manager

Yves Saint Laurent, Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick, £29

"I thought a genuinely hydrating and long-lasting matte lipstick was a myth until I was introduced to this gem by Giorgio Armani. I'm a little bit lipstick obsessed and this is a game-changer. I wear the shade 102 for a deep nude or 400 for a classic red." - Hollie Brotherton, Content Editor

Giorgio Armani, Rouge Matte Lipstick, £30

Estee Lauder lipstick

“I like my lipsticks to be as low maintenance as possible, so this offering from Estée Lauder is a firm favourite. Long-lasting and durable, it blends easily and gives a lovely smudged finish, which means you don’t have to constantly keep reapplying. ‘Irrepressible’ is my go-to night out vampy red, and I love the dark, pink-tinged rouge of ‘Unattainable’ for winter days.” - Hannah Dunn, Editorial Manager.

Estée Lauder, Pure Colour Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick, £27

Gym bag beauty saviours

Gym bag beauty saviours

While we would normally recommend using a proper cleanser, there’s nothing wrong with reaching for a wipe before and after the gym. Pack a hydrating face mist to keep you cool, and don’t forget to follow your workout with a moisturiser to compensate for everything you’ve just sweated out.

Ideally it’s best to remove your makeup before the gym, but sometimes we want to cover up (or simply won’t have time to remove it) and that’s ok. Switching a heavy-coverage liquid foundation for a powder or tinted moisturiser will limit any breakouts. The BareMinerals Original Foundation is our favourite for low-maintenance flawless skin – it claims to be so pure you could sleep in it. If you can’t live without eye makeup, save time after class by sticking to waterproof formulas.

Post-gym hair isn’t always pretty, but there are a few steps you can take to reduce the damage. Firstly, keep it off your face during exercise. Dry shampoo is everyone’s best friend and we love Aveda Shampure to absorb any excess oil when you’re done. Finish with a quick spritz of hair mist like Gucci Bloom, and you’re ready to go.

Benefit, Fun, Fortune and Favourites! Gift Set, £26.50

Guerlain’s KissKiss lipstick already has one of our favourite formulas, and to celebrate Chinese New Year it’s been redesigned with a metallic red case that we can’t wait for an excuse to show off. Enriched with mango butter and hyaluronic acid spheres, it’s super-hydrating and gives the illusion of fuller lips.

3 steps to glowing skin

3 steps to glowing skin

Suffering with a serious case of January face? You're not alone. After a month of drinking, eating and plenty of merriment now is the time to reboot your skincare routine. From exfoliating to moisturising, follow our three simple steps to get glowing, radiant skin.

Shop Skincare

Step One: Exfoliate

Before you do anything else, invest in a skincare product containing Glycolic Acid. Dead cells = dull skin and this popular AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) gently exfoliates your skin’s surface layer, speeding up the cell renewal process. These products come in the form of cleansers, toners and masks, so play around until you find which one works best for you.

Step Two: Hydrate

Regardless of whether you have a dry or an oily complexion, your skin needs hydrating, especially during the winter months. Applying a moisturiser twice a day will keep you glowing as well as creating a barrier between your skin and the outside elements. We love applying Charlotte’s Magic Cream in the morning before primer, and La Mer’s The Moisturizing Cream at night after serum.

Step Three: Prime

A good primer will keep your makeup in place and leave your foundation looking flawless. Choose one designed to illuminate and you can achieve that highly-coveted lit-from-within glow. If you prefer a more natural look, these can also be worn alone to even out skin tone and add a boost of radiance.

How to bend the beauty rules

From what eye colour we can pull off to whether it's acceptable to wear makeup at all, conventional beauty rules are subconsciously drilled into us from an early age. Thankfully, boundaries are being broken down and our only rule is, we make our own. Here are three to forget about immediately...

Shop Beauty

Rule #1: Makeup should be worn to enhance your natural features

Yes, makeup does an amazing job of covering imperfections, sculpting our faces and perfecting our pouts, but it can also be a lot of fun. Embrace the graphic liner, colour block with bright eyeshadow and throw on a statement lip if you feel like it. Want to go bold with both your eyes and lips? We salute you. More can be more.

Rule #2: Avoid shiny skin

Where do you draw the line between a dewy glow and a shiny complexion? You don’t have to. Luminosity looks healthy, so even if your complexion is on the oily side, don't feel confined to using every mattifying product out there. Highlighter also lifts your features and looks killer on everyone.

Rule #3: Men can't wear makeup

In the last few years we've seen a growing number of men upping their grooming game by adding makeup to their morning routine. From concealer and bronzer to brow and lip products, anything goes. Remember, some of the best makeup artists in the world are men.

Beauty while you sleep

Skincare products to cheat a good night's sleep

Beauty sleep is no myth. Not only does getting eight hours of shut-eye give your cells a chance to repair themselves, your skin also absorbs higher levels of nutrients while your body is resting. With this in mind, here’s our edit of the best products to use in your night-time routine to leave your skin glowing.

A serum is the first product that should be applied after cleansing. The ingredients are potent with smaller molecules, which means they're more easily and deeply absorbed by your skin. This makes them perfect for tackling specific problems such as wrinkles or dark spots.

Next up, slather on a moisturiser to help seal your serum into the skin. It'll also work hard to improve your skin’s moisture levels (essential for both oily and dry skin types) and strengthen its natural protective barrier.

From Charlotte Tilbury's Overnight Bronze and Glow Mask, which promises to leave skin looking sun-kissed, to Lancôme's ultra-hydrating Hydra Zen Hydrating Overnight Jelly Face mask, they cater to a whole range of skincare needs.
