3 steps to glowing summer skin

3 steps to glowing summer skin

Suffering from a dull, tired complexion? That's not what you need during the summer months. From exfoliating to priming, follow our three simple steps to reboot your skincare routine and get glowing, radiant skin.

Shop Beauty

Step One: Exfoliate
Before you do anything else, invest in skincare containing Glycolic Acid. Dead cells = dull skin and this popular AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) gently exfoliates your skin’s surface layer, speeding up the cell renewal process. These products come in the form of cleansers, toners and masks, so play around until you find which one works best for you.

Step Two: Hydrate
Regardless of whether you have a dry or an oily complexion, your skin needs hydrating, even during the summer months. Applying a moisturiser twice a day will keep you glowing as well as creating a barrier between your skin and the outside elements. Charlotte’s Magic Cream contains a boost of hyaluronic acid and rose hip oil, which makes it the perfect base for your makeup. At night we'd recommend applying the La Mer Moisturizing Cream after your serum.

Step Three: Prime
A good primer will keep your makeup in place all day and leave your foundation looking flawless. Choose one designed to illuminate and you can achieve that coveted lit-from-within glow. If you prefer a more natural look, they can also be worn alone to even out skin tone and add a boost of radiance.

6 of the best face sun creams

6 of the best sun creams for your face

Wherever you're getting your Vitamin D fix, sun cream should be the most important step in your skincare routine this summer. Exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays will accelerate the signs of ageing (think wrinkles and sagging), but this can be reduced with the right sun protection. From skin-enhancing to water-resistant SPFs, these are the best face sun creams to suit your needs.

So with this year's festivities set to be bigger than ever, we're getting ready to celebrate this milestone in style. Festival makeup ideas

Festival Makeup Ideas

Festival season is almost upon us, and with it comes the chance to step out of our beauty comfort zone. From bold colours to excessive glitter and glossy lids, throw out your usual makeup routine and try something new.

Shop Makeup

All that glitters
Glitter is forever a mainstay at festivals. You don’t have to go full Giambattista Valli (although that's always encouraged), but applied around your eyes, on your cheekbones or even on your lips, you’ll look suitably disco. Keep loose glitter in place using a liquid highlighter like the NARS Illuminator.

Get glossy
There’s a fine line between dewy and greasy, but this blurs where festivals are concerned. Matte is out, so emulate a sun-kissed glow with an illuminating primer, adding highlighter and eye gloss. Yes, you read that right - add a glossy top coat to your eyes for a high-shine finish.

Electro eyes
When it comes to your eyes, the bolder the better. From vibrant blue to neon yellow, anything goes. Sweep one highly-pigmented shade over your lids to create a block of colour, or go (slightly) more subtle with bright eye liner. For the most intense colour pay-off, spritz your brush with a setting spray before you apply.

Men's Grooming Guide

Wondering how to get the perfect shave? Follow our guide for all the tips, tricks and grooming products you need to make your routine a whole lot smoother.

Shop Men's Grooming

Before you do anything else, start by washing your face with warm water. Whether this is in the shower or over a basin, it will soften the hair making it easier to cut, as well as opening your pores, reducing the risk of ingrown hairs. Even better, use an exfoliating cleanser to remove every trace of dirt, oil and dead skin cells which would otherwise end up in your razor.

Now you have the perfect canvas, apply a shaving gel or cream to the hair in upwards motions. The Elemis Ice Cool Foaming Shave Gel is a fail-safe option. This will improve the glide of your razor and show exactly which spots you've missed. A good formula will also protect against irritation and result in fewer nicks.

A hard-working post-shave product will ensure your skin looks healthy and leave you smelling fresh. Rinse your face with cold water to close your pores before applying an aftershave balm like the Acqua di Parma Colonia Pura to soothe your skin and eliminate redness or itching. Finally, apply a moisturiser to restore your hydration levels.

The cleanser

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash

Washing your face morning and night with this cleanser will ensure your skin is free of dirt and impurities - especially important if you live in a city. Formulated with caffeine, vitamins C and E and invigorating citrus extracts, it will revitalise even the tiredest skin.

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash 1L, £56

The exfoliator

If you shave you're already exfoliating your skin regularly, but using this mask will further remove dead skin cells which can cause a dull-looking complexion. Known in Korea for its mattifying properties, black charcoal is the key ingredient, keeping skin smooth and shine-free.

Erborian Black Scrub, £24

The moisturiser

Origins Save The Males

Applying a moisturiser twice a day after cleansing will keep your skin healthy and hydrated. This one is lightweight, oil-free and includes powerful antioxidants which work to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Origins Save The Males Moisturiser, £30

The treatment

Clinique For Men Maximum Hydrator Water-Gel Concentrate

Formulated with 10% sulphur and vitamin B3, this targeted treatment soothes and reduces the appearance of blemishes. The anti-bacterial properties of salicylic acid also help to reduce acne-causing bacteria, preventing future breakouts.

Kiehl's Blemish Control Spot Treatment, £24.50

The eye cream

Clarins Line Control Eye Balm

Concerned about the signs of ageing? Don't neglect your eyes. As one of the most delicate areas of the face, it's usually the first place to start showing fine lines. Try this cream from Clinique to combat wrinkles and restore firmness, while also brightening dark circles.

Clinique Age Defense for Eyes, £27.50

The mask

Niod Mud

A weekly mud mask treatment will help to decongest your skin, drawing out a build-up of dirt, oil and toxins, which is especially important if you suffer with blackheads. Apply to cleansed skin for a clearer complexion - you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Niod Flavanone Mud, £38

The serum

Dior Capture Youth

Serums contain a potent dose of ingredients targeted at specific skincare problems. If you use one, apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser. Dior's Redness Soother is perfect for sensitive, irritated skin.

Dior Capture Youth Redness Soother Serum, £75

The lip balm

LA MER The Lip Balm

Now you have your skin in check, don't neglect your lips. Start protecting them with a quick swipe of lip balm at the end of your skincare routine - you’ll thank us come winter. This formula includes marine extracts, botanicals and vitamins to soften roughness and help them to heal.

3 ways to wear bright eyeliner

3 ways to wear bright eyeliner

Coloured eyeliner is a beauty trend that's here to stay, and we're not mad about it. It's a quick and easy way to add interest to an otherwise simple makeup look and (we promise) it can be a flattering alternative to black. Here are three ways to wear the look this summer...

Shop Eyeliner

Electric blue

A slick of blue liner is a welcome change from the minimalist makeup we often expect during the summer months and this royal shade gives us big Jardin Majorelle vibes - exactly where we want to be when the sunshine hits. Wear a thick line with fresh, dewy skin and minimal mascara to look daring, not dated.

Pure white

Now trending: white eyeliner. From Sophie Turner to Bella Hadid and most recently Jodie Comer, we've seen some of the most stylish celebs wearing the look. It's versatile enough to wear from day to night and instantly brightens the eyes. Makeup artist Naoko Scintu used the Diorshow On Stage Liner in Matte White on Jodie for the premiere of Killing Eve season two. She paired it with warm blush and a nude lip.

The inner corner of your eye is a high impact area. Highlighter is usually applied here to add brightness, but this summer try adding a neon colour à la Rihanna and Katie Jane Hughes. It's a simple, less intimidating way to wear the trend and can be created using eyeshadow too. Pair it with black winged liner for maximum impact.

How to do your own bridal makeup

How to do your own bridal makeup

If the thought of leaving the fate of your wedding day makeup in someone else’s hands fills you with anxiety, take control (and save some of your budget) by doing your own. It’s a good idea not to stray too far from your usual look, but take note of these beauty tips to ensure you’re at your very best.
Shop Beauty
1. Preparation is key. Never underestimate the importance of a good skincare routine. With a glowing complexion underneath your makeup, you’re already halfway there.

2. Keep your face in place all day using a primer. NARS Pore and Shine Control Primer is a firm favourite amongst makeup artists as it controls shine and blurs imperfections.

3. This will probably be the most photographed day of your life, so choose a foundation that looks good both in person and on camera. We recommend Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. It blends seamlessly, boosts radiance, and doesn’t contain SPF (which can make you look washed out in photos).

4. The easiest way to look bright and well-rested - and you may not be feeling it on the big day - is to conceal your under eyes properly. Apply a heavy duty concealer over dark circles first - we love MAC Pro Longwear Concealer as it's full coverage without being cakey. Then follow with an illuminating concealer like YSL Touche Eclat.

5. Warm the highest points of the face with bronzer, then add Bobbi Brown Pale Pink Blush to the apples of your cheeks for a healthy glow. For lips, choose a colour that’s similar to your natural tone for an understated but polished look.

6. Don’t forget to practice. Run through your whole look around three weeks before the big day, including fake tan if you plan on wearing it. This will give an idea of how much time the whole process will take and ensure your hair and makeup complement each other.

How to make your beauty routine more sustainable

How to make your beauty routine more sustainable

As the climate change crisis continues, we're looking at our beauty routines to see how we can make a difference. From using sustainable beauty products with eco-friendly packaging and ingredients to eliminating certain things altogether, here's how you can do your bit for the planet.

Shop Beauty

1. Ditch the face wipes

Elemis Cleansing Balm

You’ve heard it before but we’ll say it again: stop using face wipes. Not only are they one of the least effective ways of cleansing, but they also take up to 100 years to break down in landfill. Try using a flannel with a balm or liquid cleanser instead. A little bit of the Elemis Pro Cleansing Balm goes a long way and removes all traces of makeup while nourishing your skin.

Elemis Cleansing Balm, £43

2. Choose eco-friendly packaging

BYBI Babe Balm

As well as producing vegan products, BYBI uses only 100% recyclable packaging. Babe Balm comes in a biodegradable tube made from sugar cane and it looks great on the 'gram too. Cruelty-free beauty brand Aveda also ensures its packaging is made using as much post-consumer recycled materials as possible, and Dior has removed all cellophane and cardboard wedges from its products.

BYBI Babe Balm, £18

3. Recycle when you can

Clarins Double Serum

According to Recycle Now, “almost 90% of people in the UK claim to regularly recycle from the kitchen, while only 52% say they regularly recycle from the bathroom.” That’s a lot of beauty packaging going to waste. Any glass or plastic packaging can be recycled, just make sure the containers are empty and clean before disposing of them, as any remnants can contaminate other recyclables.

Clarins Double Serum, £58

4. Buy ethically-sourced formulas

La Mer

The famous La Mer miracle broth used in their skincare products contains only sustainably-sourced sea kelp to help preserve ocean resources. The luxury brand also supports ocean habitats through donations. Another reason to splash out on a Moisturizing Cream, if ever we needed one.

La Mer The Moisturizing Cream, £345

5. Make use of brand schemes

Kiehl’s has a loyalty card scheme where you’ll receive a free travel-sized product once you’ve returned 10 empties to one of their stores. Origins will also recycle your cosmetics, accepting empty containers from any beauty brand.

Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, £38

6. Try multi-tasking products

NARS The Multiple

Fewer products equal less packaging. There are so many multi-purpose products that are as good if not better than their singular counterparts. We love NARS The Multiple which can be used on your lips, eyes and cheeks.

NARS The Multiple, £30

Summer beauty trends you'll actually want to wear

Summer beauty trends you'll actually want to wear

The SS19 catwalks were awash with a whole new host of beauty trends, from statement emerald cat eyes at Versace to gravity-defying ponytails at Ashley Williams. But luckily for us, the catwalk also played host to some incredibly wearable beauty trends this season. Proving summer beauty isn't all about festival glitter (although there was ample of that, see Pat McGrath's creations at Valentino for inspiration) neon coral lips, unkempt brows, and gloriously fresh skin are all key.

Shop Beauty

A statement lip

A bright lip is the ultimate beauty statement and paired with otherwise minimal makeup it looks effortlessly cool. Go bold with orange lipstick and bronzed skin, or take inspiration from the Burberry runway and wear a classic red with just a little mascara. Make sure it lasts all day by applying lip liner in a shade close to your natural colouring first.

Natural brows

A low-maintenance beauty trend is something we can definitely get on board with, and this summer embracing your natural eyebrows is the way to go. Channel Lily Collins and create volume using upward strokes with a gel, while keeping shaping to a minimum. It’s an instantly youthful look.

A healthy glow

Glossy skin is going nowhere fast, but how do you hit the sweet spot before you look shiny? The key is to start with skincare. Whatever your skin type, keep your complexion well-hydrated by using a serum and moisturiser twice a day, but if you’re prone to oiliness, use a mattifying primer on your t-zone too. Use a glow-giving foundation like Armani Luminous Silk and add highlighter to the highest points of your face – your cheekbones, browbones and cupid’s bow.

The beauty cabinet on their favourite lip products

The Beauty Cabinet on their favourite lip products

These days we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to lipsticks, balms and glosses, so choosing which one deserves a place in our handbag is no mean feat. Thankfully our beauty team has tried more than your average makeup junkie, so when something stays in our rotation, you know it’s truly passed the test. Here’s our pick of the lip products we can’t live without.

Dior Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick

Dior Rouge

“Anyone who knows me knows I love a red lipstick. At the moment my favourite is the Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge. It’s both highly-pigmented and moisturising with a semi-matte finish, and best of all, it lasts all day.” - Jamie Adams, Buyer

Dior Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge, £30

La Mer The Lip Balm

La Mer The Lip Balm

“During winter I always keep this balm to hand as it’s the best product for combating dry lips. It contains La Mer’s nutrient-rich miracle broth which hydrates and strengthens their protective barrier. If I’m wearing a lipstick in the evening, it keeps the colour long-lasting too.” - Sarah Thompson, Buyer

La Mer The Lip Balm, £18

Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Lipgloss

Urban Decay Lipgloss

“This lip gloss only launched recently, but it’s quickly become a go-to in my makeup bag. The hydrating, glossy formula gives the famous Urban Decay Naked range a new spin. I like to swipe this over the top of any nude lipstick to instantly plump and nourish my lips." - Eleanor Spain, Assistant Buyer

Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Lipgloss, £15.50

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick

YSL lipstick

“As a busy mum I don’t have a lot of time to put my makeup on. This lipstick gives more colour than a tinted balm, but it’s not heavy enough that I need a mirror to apply it. The best bit is that once it’s finished you can use the case to make a ring (loads of beauty bloggers are doing it!)” - Georgia-May Dayton, Brand Partnerships Manager

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick, £29

Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani Matte Lipstick

"I thought a genuinely hydrating and long-lasting matte lipstick was a myth until I was introduced to this gem by Giorgio Armani. I'm a little bit lipstick obsessed and it's a game changer. I wear the shade 102 for a deep nude or 400 for a classic red." - Hollie Brotherton, Content Editor

Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani Matte Lipstick, £30

Estée Lauder Pure Colour Envy Matte Lipstick

Estée Lauder

"“I like my lipsticks to be as low maintenance as possible, so this offering from Estée Lauder is a firm favourite. Long-lasting and durable, it blends easily and gives a lovely smudged finish, which means you don’t have to constantly keep reapplying. ‘Irrepressible’ is my go-to night out vampy red, and I love the dark, pink-tinged rouge of ‘Unattainable’ for winter days.” - Hannah Dunn, Editorial Manager

Estée Lauder Pure Colour Envy Matte Lipstick, £27

Gym bag beauty saviours

Gym bag beauty saviours

While we would normally recommend using a proper cleanser, there’s nothing wrong with reaching for a wipe before and after the gym. Pack a hydrating face mist to keep you cool, and don’t forget to follow your workout with a moisturiser to compensate for everything you’ve just sweated out.

Ideally it’s best to remove your makeup before the gym, but sometimes we want to cover up (or simply won’t have time to remove it) and that’s ok. Switching a heavy-coverage liquid foundation for a powder or tinted moisturiser will limit any breakouts. The BareMinerals Original Foundation is our favourite for low-maintenance flawless skin – it claims to be so pure you could sleep in it. If you can’t live without eye makeup, save time after class by sticking to waterproof formulas.

Post-gym hair isn’t always pretty, but there are a few steps you can take to reduce the damage. Firstly, keep it off your face during exercise. Dry shampoo is everyone’s best friend and we love Aveda Shampure to absorb any excess oil when you’re done. Finish with a quick spritz of hair mist like Gucci Bloom, and you’re ready to go.
